Google Update
Well it looks like there is a Google algorithm update under way. That means you will see a big change in the SERP’s. Keyword SEO Company move from #5 to #2 and #3 on my site and I have been in #5 for I don’t know how long. SEO Company is a 13k Overture PPC per month word so that is a pretty competitive keyword to rank well for in the SEO industry. There has is been quite a bit of talk for the last week about the SERPs moving around. Last week Search Engine Roundtable had a post Google Update? where Barry noted the discuss on SEO forums on there being an update. “For what it is worth, there has been some quiet threads plugging away this week discussing a possible Google update that is going on. Many are watching some of the datacenters closely.” Here are some of the threads on the forums that have been discussing this since last week. DigitalPoint: Google seems to be dancing SE0Chat: Google update today Webmaster World: Google’s Pending September Update I have been keeping an eye on Matt Cutts blog watching for a weather report but nothing from Matt. Interesting this is we are due for both a Toolbar Pagerank and a Backlink export. Last Toolbar PR export was 95 days ago on July 14th and for Backlinks the last export was 43 days ago on Sept 4th. You can see the latest dates and numbers on this Pagerank Export History page. Note I said Toolbar Pagerank export and Backlink export. They are not longer considered updates as they don’t affect the SERP. And SERP movement during a TBPR or BL export is due to the on going everflux changes.

More info on updates
I’ve already talked about index updates some in the past. These days rather than having a large monolithic update, Google tends to have smaller (and more frequent) individual launches. So I think my Sept. 8th, 2005 post on the subject of non-updates was just mentioning that some new backlinks were visible, but not much in the way of algorithms/scoring/metadata had changed. After that, some people might have noticed some changes around Sept. 22, 2005. Or some CJK folks might have noticed some changes around Oct. 5, 2005. Or a few European folks might have noticed some changes around Oct. 7, 2005. Or some people might have noticed some changes this past weekend. My point is that more than ever, we are constantly working to improve our algorithms and scoring. Some changes are hardly noticed at all. Some changes (e.g. user interface improvements) are more visible. Some changes have nothing to do with spam, such as the changes for Chinese and Europe that I mentioned above. Some changes do try to decrease spam or increase core quality. Just to give you a heads-up, I think a new set of backlinks (and possibly PageRank) will probably be visible relatively soon; I’m guessing within the next few days. I still expect some flux after that though, just to let you know. Update: Just to clarify, these days with lots of smaller and larger changes happening at different points in time, it’s a little arbitrary to decide when to call something an update. That decision has usually fallen on Brett Tabke’s shoulders over at WebmasterWorld (WMW also chooses what name they want to call it when Brett decides enough has changed to call it an update.) Given that there should be new PageRank/backlinks visible in a few days (assuming no issues at our end), I wouldn’t be surprised if Brett slaps a name on it pre-emptively, even though there will still be some flux to come.

What is an update?
Google updates its index data, including backlinks and PageRank, continually and continuously. We only export new backlinks, PageRank, or directory data every three months or so though. (We started doing that last year when too many SEOs were suffering from “B.O.”, short for backlink obsession.) When new backlinks/PageRank appear, we’ve already factored that into our rankings quite a while ago. So new backlinks/PageRank are fun to see, but it’s not an update; it’s just already-factored-in data being exported visibly for the first time in a while. Google also crawls and updates its index every day, so different or more index data usually isn’t an update either. The term “everflux” is often used to describe the constant state of low-level changes as we crawl the web and rankings consequently change to a minor degree. That’s normal, and that’s not an update. Usually, what registers with an update to the webmaster community is when we update an algorithm (or its data), change our scoring algorithms, or switch over to a new piece of infrastructure. Technically Update Gilligan is just backlink/PageRank data becoming visible once more, not a real update. There haven’t been any substantial algorithmic changes in our scoring in the last few days. I’m happy to try to give weather reports when we do our update scoring/algo data though. Um, that’s all I can think of regarding taxonomies of updates, so I guess I’ll publish it. :)

Из прочитанного сделал вывод, что это весьма спорное заявление, не подтверждённое никакими вескими фактами.
